I want to run the soon to be delivered MTH RK LIRR RS-1 with passenger cars, but I am not too happy with the equipment available from MTH that was cataloged with it.

I am thinking of ordering a set of heavyweight P70 coaches (tuscan) from Golden Gate Depot, but I don't know too much about the P70 as it relates to the LIRR. I see some photos of them here and there during web searches, but nothing concrete. Would a RS-1 in World's Fair colors ever pulled this type of car? Usually the LIRR trains I grew up looking at on the Port Jeff line in the 80's were a mix and mostly P72's.

Hi Ron, RS-1’s weren’t as powerful as 3’s so pulling heavyweights was generally a rare site.

I pointed this out to MTH but it was too late. They had planned passenger sounds to go with the 60’ cookie cutter H.W.’s.

I hope they used all the real MP3’s and scripts I supplied to them but I have a feeling it may be the S.O.Sh.

I slid in some freight sounds and scripts using the S keys as well.

I hope the shipment beat the planned union dock and container strike.

Hopefully my porch will have another box on it soon.

Tuscan Red was gone by the early 1950s when it was replaced with a light gray paint scheme. At this time the Long Island was shedding its Pennsy look. By the 1964 - 65 World's Fair, the dark gray Dashing Dan paint scheme was in use. The commuter fleet was predominantly P54s, not P70s.

MTH's Rail King 027 heavyweight cars are close to the P54s in appearance, but the trucks should be 2-axle instead of 3-axle.

I am repainting MTH Rail King 027 heavyweight cars to mimic the LIRR P54 steam era trailer coaches. This is what I start with.

Some day I will change the trucks to a 2-axle type. The length, width and height of the MTH 027 heavyweights are reasonable close to the P54. Why MTH hasn't made these cars available in LIRR paint schemes is a mystery to me.
