I just got one of the new Lionel BNSF heritage locomotives and the sound of the horn keeps changing on me, and it's driving me nuts.  I seemed to remember that Lionel has made changing the sound a thing in newer locomotives, but I can't find anything about it in the manual about how one would change the sound or how to lock in the sound you want so it never changes again.  It is very frustrating!

Really, they used AUX 1?  Why not AUX 3?  AUX 1 is already used for so much else, like turning on sequence control, or getting the alternate crew talk dialog, now I have to worry about the horn or bell changing on me too?  No wonder it kept changing.  Is there any way to disable this "feature"?  It's got to be the dumbest implementation there is.  They should have just used jumpers or dip switches next to the smoke, program, and Bluetooth switches.  This is a crying shame, really going to make me pause on buying more locomotives.

Aux 1 will only change the horn or bell if you press Aux 1 as the last key before pressing the horn or bell buttons.  If you accidentally press aux one, then press another button first before pressing horn or bell.  ALSO, pressing Aux 1 and then 0 to reset the locomotive more than once in a row will change the horn.

Brian,

Right on the money.  Aux1 is used as a preface (shift) key as a the lead-in key press for entering many advanced functions, particularly those that don't change very often.

It appears that the OP should have a problem with all of the others as well if he's accidentally pressing Aux 1 before blowing the horn.

The only logical alternative would be to replace the Aux 1-and-the-next-button-pushed sequences in each case, including 'Change Horn', with distinct and separate keys.  Unfortunately there's no more room on the Cab 2 for these extra buttons.  The Aux 1 shift key will have to do, especially since it's associated with mechanical action and sound.

I haven't played with Aux 1 or Aux 2 in many years, and never with Aux 3 so feel free to set me straight on this next conclusion.  Using Aux 2, associated with lights, or Aux 3, associated with unique features not on found on locomotives, as the shift key instead of Aux 1 would not make this clearer, but only make the logic worse.

As a general observation, the 5 different bell and whistle/horn sounds is a feature which even those of us that use a CAB-1L have the ability to access simply by pressing the bell or whistle/horn and then, if we want to CHANGE the sound, pressing the AUX1 button followed by pressing the bell or whistle/horn button again. In my opinion it's pretty straightforward and personally I enjoy changing the sounds once in awhile just for variety's sake. 🤗
