I recently bought two Atlas 2 rail O SD40's. Everything about these locomotives is fantastic, very well detailed, scale proportions, well weighted.

The only thing I wish was different is the axle length. Why don't the axles extend all the way to the side frame journal just like the prototype?

The prototype axles are connected to the Hyatt Journals and the Journals move up & down with the springs sandwiched between the Journals and the side frame. It seems to me, model locos could do the same thing.

I'd REALLY like to see the rollerbearings turn on the Atlas O GP60s.

EMD locomotives equipped with the older Hyatt journal boxes, do not have rotating roller bearing end caps, since the boxes have sealed covers. Only the "newer" model locomotives have the Timken cartridge type roller bearings (GG and GE on EMD and GE locomotives, respectively), with the rotating end caps. Thus, the older SD40 models should not have the rotating end caps, typical of the Timken cartridge roller bearings.

I too like my axle stubs to be functional.

 

But in this price range it probably will not happen.  If you want to see journal boxes go up and down with rotating bearing caps, look for a "Car & Locomotive  Shop"  Alco.  

 

Alas, there was not enough market for these fine models.  I could not justify even one.  But they had everything you could possibly want, including the best mechanism money could buy.
