I am presented with a very good buy on the MTH 30-1168-0 which is a PRR Mountain with Locosounds. The engine looks prefect, ran beautifully, smoked like it was on fire. One of the marker lights is out but they are replacing it as part of the deal.

I'm just curious, should there be any sound besides chuffing, bell and whistle? I imagine I will have it upgraded to PS2 at a later time when I fully commit to command control, so I'm not bothered now, just curious.

I'm looking at the L1 due to be released in June 2014. The LHS is going to confirm they will get them before I have to make a deposit. I've already bought one PS2 diesel and was enormously pleased with it. And after some reading on DCS and Legacy I am leaning towards DCS. With the possibility of a Legacy base station if I ever want to add a Lionel Legacy or TMCC engine.

On the whole though, the DCS looks much less complicated. And the 2 systems seem to be equally capable.

When you get it, check the speaker to see if any flaking of the anodized (?) metal on the speaker housing has occurred, you might need to replace it.

The locosound steam is marginal IMO, like a box-o-rox (the diesel sound is fine).

Installing PS2 shouldn't be an issue, I installed PS2 in a RK 2-8-0 that had Locosound and left the tach tape on the flywheel, turned out great.

The tach in the kit came without a spacer (or was it with a spacer?) and I had to get one from one of our fellow forumites (actually got 2 just in case).  Buying the spare one was easier than having to unsolder the tach (to either put in the spacer or take it out).  Someone should post shortly to straighten that out!
