I have a Golden Gate in Pennsy. Really like it.

depending how handy or motivated you are, the American Standard line of heavyweight kits are also worth a look. they are build up kits that make extremely well-detailed models, but require an amount of work.

they show up at swap meets and ebay. all-in price with trucks is similar to GGD prices, but not RTR.

For 60' scale length cars you may want to look at the AtlasO Trainman C&NW models.

I am now finishing a Mac's Car Shop 62 seater for The Congressional. The PRR ran this from D.C. along the Northeast Corridor. The kit is aluminum without a lot of interior detail, but it is scale and the windows are correct. I picked this up at the Cleveland Show.......for a song!

This car will be assigned to my Penn Central passenger train, which is about as prototypical as I can make up a train. It will be decorated in the "transitional" scheme which means......it's still got some PRR markings as well as the PC letterboard. If any of yinz remembers the PC.......you could see about anything running on their passenger trains. PRR....NYC....rust...you name it!

If you can find any of these kits, do not hesitate to tackle construction. I have modest skills and I believe my efforts have paid off!

Russ Briggs Designs did a redoux of the 1970's Kemtron Union Pacific brass kits.
They run $80 - $450 depending on the level of build and quality.

The Walthers Hiawatha from 1977 was simply wonderful but VERY Milwaukee...

I must confess its been a long while since I've seen these on the market, March Meet two years ago...$1200 a car. They were in 1994 $450 unpainted and $600-$700 painted.

I'll drop in some photos of these later.

Truly Golden Gate Depot plastic heavyweight cars are fantastic. For the money they are perfect. I'm going to experiment with using a Pullman Car Co. Resin kit and take the 6/6 Poplar series sides and install them on a GGD!! I'll keep you guys posted on that one.

I like the GGD Cars but will save pennies.

Glad you like the kit. You purchased it from me, and I may still have one or two Mac Shops Congressional cars left to sell. As I recall you also got a pair of GGD trucks in the deal. Reply to this post if interested in additional cars.

If you want budget brass, Sunset/3rd Rail did PRR P54 cars (Baggage, Combine, and Coach) with interiors that were pretty nice. I've seen them go on the big auction for less than $200 which I think is quite a bargain.

Wow! If you are into modeling that era those are really nice cars.

I just scanned it - surely someone would have brought up the $20 Walthers kit?

 

I'm glad you did!

I would second Walthers and their follow-on All-Nation kits for your purpose, which

in built-up versions can be bought cheap, at less than the cost of a kit, sometimes.

Of course, with a kit, you'd have to build it but could kit bash in progress, easier

than cutting into a complete one.

This is a Walthers 9100-series car, and I prefer these to PSC Brass, although I have a string of them, too.  The trick is to find the later Walthers cars (blue pin stripes on the box) and if you buy them built-up, make sure the sides are straight, and not nailed on.
