I need a Pittman motor for the MTH Premier Allegheny, it appears that MTH no longer has any of the compatible motors for sale.  What are folks that are upgrading using Pittman motors using as a source?

The motor in question is the 9434J434 12VDC motor.  Obviously, any one the same size with similar specs will do the trick.  The motor has the standard Pittman 4-hole screw holes for 6-32 screws in a 1" square.  The motor is 1.6" in diameter, and 2.4" long.  Shaft is .154" diamater and .55" long with a flat side.  It's a 12V 6,000 RPM motor.

If someone has a good armature for the above motor, that would work as well, the one I have has several smoked windings, and of course, it doesn't function.

Lionel has them. They have both 56mm/2.4" and 62mm Pittmans. I think they have both in 12v and 15v. Harmon Yards is the Pittman maven. He has used 12-18v motors and says they all perform similarly. Hopefully he will chime in. If you go the Lionel route you will obviously have to wait until they are back online.

MTH part #?

Chuck, it's BE-0000030, but MTH claims out of stock.  Perhaps some dealer has one?

Yep, I figured they might have them, but I won't know for a month or more.  I'd like to get Tom's locomotive back together.

I see I’m late to the party...as usual....John, shoot me an email...I can get you hooked up....do you need the motor with the D slot shaft?.......Pat

I spent an hour looking at those on eBay, never did find what I need.

For the Williams, a drop-in replacement is the Mabuchi RS-555 SA motor, bolts right up and gives you smoother running than the 3-pole one.  I've bought those on eBay for less than $20.

You know the Allegheny has a lot of room inside, the 555 might fit.   If so I would rather have the 555 about .5" longer than a 545 guessing the armature and magnets are a bit longer also. The driveshaft may have to be shortened and the motor mount moved forward for the back of the motor to clear the backhead.    j

Personally, I wouldn't replace a Pittman 9434 with a Mabuchi 555.  The Pittman is a better motor.  That being said, even in a 12V winding, the Pittman is a slower-turning motor.  So it would be a poor choice for a Williams K4, unless you also replace that stump-pulling 44:1 gearbox with a taller (numerically lower) one.  You could swap in a gearbox from a US Hobbies brass loco, Northwest Short Line, or one from a Williams Crown Edition Mikado or 0-6-0 switcher.  Andy Edelman used to offer this service in the early 1990s.

John if you can't source the correct MTH part, I wouldn't hesitate to use one of the Lionel 9434 motors with the 15.1 volt winding.  I believe they also have a flatted shaft for the flywheel and U-joint coupling.  One of the benefits of the higher-voltage winding is smoother starts and lower current draw.  Of course, Lionel's service department is offline for a little while.

Call Pittman!

Dunno about now, but in the olden days buying direct saved about $50 per motor.  It has to be a "stock" motor - everything after the 9434 is customer specific.  At one time I had my own special number - I paid pennies extra for ball bearings and silver graphite brushes.

Yep, back in the day Bob, we could do that....not so easy anymore. Plus, the prices for onesie, twosies are through the roof. I’ve tried to run that rabbit......if I recall, the original owner of Pittman was a model railroader himself...........Pat

Thanks to all, I have located a motor and it's on it's way.

The 15 volt version will give more 'umphh' but will need a special tach strip made if you wanted to keep near SMPH.

This statement doesn't make sense to me.  The flywheel is the same size, and the tach tape is already on it.  Since the tach tape determines the speed, I don't see any reason I'd have to have a custom tape for any motor change.  FWIW, I've swapped Mabuchi motors in several different locomotives with DCS, and nothing changed but the motor, they ran exactly the same speeds.
