Looking for Repair Help on Lionel Legacy DD35 6-28311 - Blinking Cab light and rear smoke unit not working

Most likely the rear motor needs replacing.

Chuck, I assume you mean rear fan motor?

Yes, that is correct. I have found that sometimes if you remove the motor and shoot some contact cleaner in the motor and then re-oil the bearings, that will solve the problem.

Chuck, thanks for the tips.  I tore into the loco today and found the resistor on the front unit was burned up as well as the one leg of it broke off from the board (so an open circuit).  That's what was tripping the trouble code.  I swapped the front and rear smoke unit and the trouble followed the smoke unit.  I ordered a new smoke unit from Lionel, but probably only needed the resistor.

You certainly didn't need a whole smoke unit, the resistors are easily replaceable.

John, you are correct.  These are even the screw/nut type.  I had ordered the unit before my full root cause.  I will get a resistor in the future and then have a spare full smoke unit.  Can always use spare working parts for some project.  Thanks again for the tip.

hi steam had many early lionel es44 smoke units engine with 3 blinking light 99% were fixed bye adjusting the plastic fan in the unite sometime it pushed to much to the base sometimes its to high it rubs the top
