Magnatraction 1950? or 1990

Hello; I am shopping for a Lionel NW2 and looking at the 623 Santa Fe, 1950’s, or the Western Maryland 1989 NW2 . Not going to be pulling many cars but has the magnatraction changed in 40 years, and I have seen the term “ 1950 big 027 motor “ and wondering what that means. Thanks for any replies!
