The magnets are still available from Lionel.

That's interesting. Postwar Lionel recommended a special glue, which is not available anymore, if I remember correctly. What would be a modern glue that would allow the magnetism to flow properly? I'm glad this came up as I've always wondered how to attach old or new magnets.

I would recommend red (high strength) loctite.
