Has anyone taken the modern lionel tunnels and tried to make them more realistic? If so I'd love to see some photos and how you did it.

Don't have photos anymore but I just used earth colored craft paints to add variety to the colors on it.
Placing the plastic Lionel portals on a layout basically says to layout visitors, "These are toy trains (mostly) made by Lionel." I have two of them on my layout and have left them deliberately looking exactly the way they came when they were new. I also have several portals I carved out of pink sytrofoam myself that are weathered, grimy and look very realistic. They're much cheaper than any portal you can buy in a store, including Lionel's, very easy to make and there are dozens of You Tube videos that show how to make them.
Pink foam and stock Lionel portals can complement each other nicely:
