I have several 999s and would like to know about how many 3/16 metal cars I can expect them to pull. I don't have a layout yet and want to plan some things ahead of time.
My original 1952 set came with an engine, tender, caboose, a box car, gondola, reefer, and a tank car. It had a top scale speed of about 210 mph

I think that might depend on how well lubericated the wheels are and radius of your curves. Probably 6 to 10 cars.
Tom, something like this? Check out my video, it's pulling 15 cars counting the tender.
At 10 volts it was drawing 2 amps on O-48 curves.

It will depend having clean track, 027?, grade? and how many lighter weight cars like empty gondolas, and no light bulb cars like the search light car, should be at least 8. I would test a couple of my 999 but I just treated my track with NO OX anti spark grease and the layout has more wheel slipping than it will have later.
Your back up plan, if you want to pull more, is a add weight to the engine by gluing in cut pieces of lead tire weights, or some other source of lead,etc. E6000 will work good for gluing.
