I just bought one of these and I'm not sure what it is supposed to do. yup, I'm a genious! I looked on the tube for a video but couldn't find one. My best guess is that it's Marx's answer to the gateman. I know that there's some sort of motor under it but I'm not sure what all is supposed to move. it looks like the door opens. other pics I've seen make it look like the dude is attached to the door cuz i don't see a slot for him to slide on. is there a light? is the crossing gate manual?? Can someone explain what this accessory does or post a video of it in action. thanks, jeff

It is a low rent version of lionel's gateman.
The man is attached to the inside of the door.
He holds a stop sign in one hand.
The gate lowers, the bulb on the floor inside lights and the door opens when power is applied.
The stop sign is usually missing and the crossing gate arm breaks off and is lost.

is the crossing gate is manual? like I said, I picked it up cheap. off the bat, mine is missing the stack and the man. I'm sure for copyright reasons, marx had to switch it up a little from lionel's. I like the fact that they put a crossing gate on it. to me, 1-ups the gateman. I have a gateman too...not the most exciting accessory for sure. I hope this one works...it'll be my replacement.
How about a picture. There are a couple of different type of watchman accessories. From there we can tell you what you need and if repro parts are available.

This thread I posted a while back has photos of a like-new gateman/crossing shanty.
I have never operated it (so no video), but door opens (with man attached by rivet) and gate comes down automatically.

Thanks Jim! I remember that thread because when Steve said the tractors were about $20 each, I about fell over. I'd be hooking yours up! it looks like it's in fantastic shape. I'll be curious with what/how much of mine will work. For $6, it can always be an outhouse!

LOL!
But who would want to use an outhouse that the door popped open every time a train went by????

I would, I'm not shy!
i was in galveston on vacation but I have received my shanty (yes, i went to the train museum and saw the war bonnet!). The door opens. the gate was half broke but moving. with very little effort, i managed to break it off. so, i have a shanty with an opening door that needs a gateman and a crossing gate. i'm going to try to incorporate a manual gate and see if i can get it to go up and down like the original. i need to find a naked homie to go in because I decided it may make a good outhouse!

David,

nice! too bad Marx didn't put those there to begin with.
I was looking for "parts" to fix mine and I decided it wasn't worth fixing so I got rid of it. I need to start buying "junk lots" just so i have buckets of junk to pull from. Seeing my old thread reminded me that I still need to keep looking for one. train season ends for me when pool season starts. the pool is closed and I'm starting to think trains again. jeff
Marx's charm is endless......love it!
