Dennis is only using the tape over wadded up newspaper to fill in small spaces between the real rocks along the edge of his layout. He is not recommending it to cover large areas, although similar methods are possible after you've gained some experience with more traditional methods.

Check out my response on your other thread, and consider the other book I mentioned there. Between that book and the one by Dennis Brennan, you should be all set to start scenicking.

I think you'll like it.

It covers just about every situation possible. But start small by getting some experience doing small areas first. As you gain experience, you can work your way into the more complex scenes.

Then, Dennis's book will show you how to complete your scenes with all sorts of neat finishing touches he describes.

The best thing about scenery work is that it doesn't have to be as precise and exacting as track work or wiring, etc. It's a nice change from the other aspects of layout building.
