Hi Folks,
Anyone have long-term experience running post-war locos with universal motors on DC and the possible overheating (damaging) of the solenoid coil in the mechanical e-unit? (I was under the impression the AC is "kinder" to those e-unit coils.)

The e-unit solenoid does run hotter, but I have one set up to test on DC that has been going 25-30 years and has not overheated/burned up or become magnetized. It's using a full wave bridge rectifier in a MPC GP20, it is much quieter!
