What did you use as a platform?

MTH FP45 shortened to the proper length. Atlas F40ph side windows and exhaust. I have pictures of the whole building process on Flickr under tunnelmotor3.

Wow, nice project of a unique prototype. 

 

Now all that is needed is for somebody to do some Budd stainless steel coaches to go behind it.

I would like to know how to obtain a SCALE fuel tank for the Fp45. I will be getting those Amtrak Fp45's and Want to conert them to SDP40's! The non Scale Fuel tank is the killer.

I cut the fuel tank in half, drilled and tapped new screws. It helps with the width, but still a little high off the tracks. If you want true scale, I would suggest getting a Lionel sd40t-2 and cutting the FP45 shell to fit. This way you have the proper tank and trucks.

Can I get some info on the side doors? Whats the atlas part number for those? I need a few for a cabbage project I'm working on.

The side panels are made out of .020 styrene and N scale corrugated siding from Plastruct.

Gnnpnut, the fluted sides on the cars is raised. You can convert MTH or K line cars to the stainless look by simply adding the same N scale corrugated styrene to the cars. The biggest challenge would be rebuilding the roof. I'd love to get my hands on some K line cars to do that to, but someone always seems to want them a little more then I do when they come up on eBay lol.

 

Atlas makes an F40PH???   Since when.

 

I'm slowly working on SDP40Fs too.  The MTH SD50/60 fuel tank is much closer (but still short).

Don't know when. I'm pretty new in the O scale world. When I bought it, it was described as a atlas shell and had a hand written number on the inside starting with ATL. Regardless, I got it cheap and used what I needed off it.
