Wednesday is here.  Time to smile!  The workweek is half over.

I have not been out and about lately catching new images of trains.  Landscaping duties and lots of naps have taken the place of rail fanning for me.  For now, here is a retrospective of a steam locomotive project I have been following for several years now.  New Jersey Central 113 in Minersville, PA.

Things didn't look too good for her in April of 2010 when I first visited with my digital camera.  I have some footage of her on Beta tape, and slide photos, but this is my earliest digital picture.

By the end of 2010, a few test fires and whistle-offs had taken place.  This image from March of 2011 shows her more intact than I had ever seen.  The occasion was a fundraising slide program near the Minersville station.

November 2011. A snow storm around Halloween brought a Christmassy look to number 113.

August of 2013.  Posed with CNJ business car 99 at the Minersville station.

And my final visit with her in October 2013.  She has steamed up and ran a number of trips on the Reading & Northern RR in the Minersville-Schuylkill Haven area.  I still have yet to catch her under steam.

Take this thread and run with it.  Last week's Midweek Photos received 22 responses and a lot of "likes"  Please add some of your pics to make it as interesting as the world of railroading is.

It's summer 1977 and Frisco 1632 sits on display in Ottawa, Kansas.  Owned by the Smoky Hill Railway and Historical Society, she'll sit there until 1992, when she'll be moved to the Belton, Grandview and Kansas City demonstration railroad in Belton, Missouri, where she'll eventually be given a fresh coat of paint.

She still wears the modifications made by Eagle-Picher for their operation, a cut down "clear vision" coal bunker and a high offset headlight.

This is also pretty much how IRM's 1630 looked before she was restored to operation.

Looking back,

I went to Volk Field, (Camp Douglas, WI) each summer for about 8 years with the Missouri Air National Guard.  Just outside the gate was the Milwaukee Road double track main line and the CNW  Baraboo line which crossed at grade.

Today the CP owns the now single track ex Milwaukee Road line and the CNW line is a hiking/biking trail.

Here we see the westbound Amtrak train #9 banging across the CNW diamond in downtown Camp Douglas, August 1, 1977.

Volunteers want to apply insulation and jacketing as soon as possible. They also want to repair the track in front of 113, extend it across a bridge by the grade crossing, and build an enginehouse there to get 113 out of the elements.

Fantrips help to raise funds. Nos. 113 and 425 are scheduled to doublehead again on Saturday, November 29. For schedules and fares, go to "Project 113" on Facebook and use the contact information there. Donations are greatly appreciated.

The Reading and Northern also has a part of their site dedicated to donating to steam if you chase them, with all proceeds going to 113

Looks like we have a "steam theme" going this week.  It's hard for me to find a running steamer where I live, but I found one about 2,700 miles away!   This is the Port Alberni and Pacific Railway, on Vancouver Island (in British Columbia.)  There are three railroads on Vancouver Island--one runs about 100 miles on the east edge of the island but only rarely.  Another is on the north end of the island and is the last logging railroad in North America.  Finally, there is the Port Alberni Ry which was the southern end of the logging railroad.  Poking around on the internet I discovered they had a 2-8-2T engine that they ran up a mountain to an active lumber mill several times a week.  It's was tough to talk my family into heading up there to ride the train, especially after spending the week before on a train getting there.  I really had to bribe them.

The train pulls open cars up the hill to the sawmill, about 10 miles.  The little engine really has to work!  I went during the week and managed to find the general manager, and snagged a cab ride.  That's what I like about these smaller operations--they're very accommodating!   I sat on the rear window sill and up the mountain we went!  My Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 stayed on my camera the entire time--it was the perfect lens.   The sawmill is also steam powered.  The train was oil fired but the engine powering the mill burned wood scraps.  All in all, we all enjoyed the visit and would go again.  This was a great ride and it's worth going to the next time you are in Victoria BC.

Not sure on who was the previous owner, not from the area.  I was just surprised to see it.  Their is a coal burning electric plant near by so I assume that was the destination.  The bridge is between Stillwater MN and Hudson WI.
