I'm considering building a layout similar to the one pictured below. If I would like to have one loop running my MPC era trains and the other a newer LC product at the same time (or another older conventional engine); am I correct that I would need a 2 block sections separating the inner loop from the two switches? So that I could use a transformer for the loop running the older trains and a different power source running the LC engines?

yes, that is correct, and I would recommend using AC power from a transformer for both loop vs mixing AC / DC. That will enable you to move your MPC or LC stuff seamlessly between the loops or run MPC on both at the same time etc.

The two transformers don't need to be "phased" correct? Or is that for another application? I plan on using my older transformer from the 70s and a new modern one on the other loop.

The transformers need to be phased or you can fry an engine if you ever move it under power from one loop to the other. Phasing is no big deal, just make sure the transformers are plugged in correctly. Lots of information available on the forum on how to phase transformers
Thanks. I didn't realize they needed to be phased as I only intended to keep them on their own respective loop. Accidents can happen though. I will look more into this.
