I have a Williams DRGW PA diesel (purchased in the late 90's); the front motor is not working properly and I need to replace it.  I have several questions for the forum:

  1.   Are all the motors used in Williams diesels the same?
  2.   I have upgraded this diesel to ERR TMCC control (including cruise control); should I replace both motors to ensure reasonable synching of the speed?
  3.   Can someone suggest a source for purchasing a new motor?

Thanks in advance for your help.

There are at least 2 styles: with and without flywheels. Since you upgraded the unit to ERR TMCC, that means you have flywheels, which is the smaller motor. I'm not 100% certain, but I think you need to change out only the malfunctioning one. I'm sure others will chime in.

There are two styles of flywheels on the Williams locos. One is the same diameter as the motor and is somewhat thick. the other one is wider than the motor and thinner for use in some of the shorter body locos. The PA uses the motor with the thick flywheel. It is sold out at Bachmann. That motor is used in the PA, EP5 and E7 locos, so a motor from any of these will work. The MSRP at Bachmann is $38.60. Part # 315-E002.

Chris, I've put ERR in lots of stuff without flywheels.  No requirement for ERR to have a flywheel.

I just checked his web-site. he has motors that are direct replacements for many of the Williams locos, the PA is one of them.

There were a couple of people that parted out Williams items some time ago. I don't know if anyone still does that now. I used to buy parts from Charlie Philips. It's been years since I contacted him, so I don't know if he is still in business.

I don't know if he deals with Williams, but he may be able to help.

Unfortunately Charlie Philips passed away about 2 years ago. You can even keep a check in ebay sometimes you can get a complete locomotive cheaper than the motors from Bachmann.
