Mountaineer Fans Rejoice!

Eh... I ordered one and the passenger cars since I didn't get the last set of passenger cars, but with how off the representation is, it is hard to be really excited for it. I would have preferred a standard black painted one over the faux mountaineer.

I do greatly appreciate MTH's attention to the O&W though!

Is the rose color in the photo accurate?

It's a beauty to be sure!

A VERY different loco for sure......I have never seen that scheme....cool in a way!

I'm sure with very little effort and research MTH could do a better job on a premier engine. Hopefully not another generic 4-8-2 with an off color paint job.

 

AMCDave.....here's a painting of the Mountainer.......the NYO&W's answer to the streamline era.......mocking the New York Central's term "the great steel fleet", the O&W called their passenger trains, "the great timber fleet".

The color of the locomotive model in the photograph above is way off.  It will be painted the same exact color as the previous run Railking Mountaineer and cars which were painted correctly.  This is the second release of the set.  The previous release sold out almost as fast as they shipped, so it is no surprise these are coming out again.  I have several on order and expect to have enough for everyone that wants one this time.

 

We will have the locomotive on sale as soon as it ships in for $349.99 each.  The cars will also be on sale, and will feature different names/numbers as the previous release.

 

These Railking cars look great with the Lionel semi-scale Camelback.  (If you are lucky to have it in your collection).

I'm sorry, but this is just sad.

Doesn't interest me but everybody's taste is different.

As a kid I lived close to the Soo Line who shunned streamlining, and while everyone had fleets of shiny sleek passenger cars, they ran heavyweights ( like the NYO&W) and one of the the runs was called the Mountaineer so I got mildly interested knowing that it may or not be made. Wasnt going to set myself up to be disappointed if this were so. How many others feel the same way? I wonder...Odds were it would never be made...so heres an even more obscure prototype...

 

This seems to be a case of schizophrenia. I watched Mike Wolf at TCA very proudly show everyone that highly detailed, ( read accurate ) French locomotive and now this? What audience is this playing to? Heres the real deal...

 

 

If someone is into the NYO&W they know and I mean know their equipment. So....here we have an example of reusing tooling, like a Ford Falcon pretending to be an Audi...whats up with that? There are so few examples of NYO&W models, I can understand someone wanting it...but really. Seems like a misfire to me.

Nice looking loco.  Interesting scheme.   Is this by any chance Railking Imperial?

When these were available, I stocked and sold nearly two dozen of these to individuals that apparently liked this caboose.  I didn't much care for it so I didn't buy one for my NYO&W model collection.

 

I don't question what my customers want or like.  My feeling is collect, operate or model what you want.  That's one thing that makes this hobby of ours so great.

I believe this is a standard Railking steam locomotive release.

Have to jump in (sure, you do), but since many are complaining:

The RK O&W 4-8-2 is, of course, a rather presentable, sub-48 model of a New York

Central L-3 4-8-2 (Mohawk). I have scale Mohawks, but I also have this loco in, of

all things, Southern Railway green (the SOU did have green 4-8-2's but they were

USRA and USRA-like locos). It has PS2. It runs well, and I got it years ago because I liked

it. The RK Mountaineer appeals to me for the same reason: handsome, if off. If I were

a 3RO O&W fan I'd be all over it, and just squint a bit. A lot, maybe.

Now, the O&W did have virtual L2/L3 Mohawk-clone 4-8-2's, which the RK model could

do a very nice job emulating. Unfortunately, the O&W Mountaineer paint job that

is represented was never on the "NYC-type" 4-8-2's - it was on an earlier locomotive,

as seen in the painting above.

 

Am I correct in saying that the Mountaineer paint scheme never appeared on the later O&W "Mohawk" Mountain?

If you can model and paint and decal a bit, one would get a far better "feel" (and a 1:48

loco, to boot) if one would buy a Lionel scale 4-8-2 (SOU; NH. WP had oil tenders, so, no),

move the headlight up (simple), add a bit of skirting (simple) and a close-as-you-can

paint job - bam - a lanky, Mountaineer-y, 4-8-2.

Sadly, unless one of the smaller custom manufacturers pick this up as a project, I think we'll be modifying our own Mountaineer. I don't think any of the large manufacturers will ever have the demand for this model to justify production of a detailed unit.

Again, I am extremely pleased with MTH's attention to the O&W. As fans, they'd produced F3's, FT's, and NW2's in the proper colors/schemes and have given is the 44 tonner finally, which we can work with. That is our whole diesel fleet. i'd love to see another run of all those in different numbers and single F3A units. Another camelback and some smaller steam would be welcomed too.

With all the positives we've got, I'll let them slide on this one... Just hoping we see a detailed model true to prototype at some point from someone.

CHRIS, HOW MANY of you guys modify anything? So WHY BOTHER putting up the O&W Historical Society's website if you'll accept this as anything historical?  Come on, this is an atrocious offering!

Geez, all this carping over a RAILKING offering!  It's a fantasy scheme on a semi-scale steam loco, for Pete's sake!  The only way we will see a prototypically correct loco will be if it was done in brass--seems to me Weaver floated the idea of doing a brass O&W Mountaineer a while back but there was not enough interest.  While I think the O&W is a very interesting Fallen Flag, it's a somewhat obscure RR as opposed to your PRR, UP, ATSF, etc.

Why link a bona-fide Railroad Historical Society with such a thing as this?

So what's wrong with being a "Toy Train Guy," Super7? 

 

My interest in toy trains is redecorating postwar Lionel F3's in colorful passenger train liveries popular in the '50's using, typically, more modern, 15" Lionel smooth-sided passenger cars.  My trains consist of AA or AB F3's and 5-7 passenger cars.  I use Scalecoat paint, O scale decals, and consult historical societies and the web for photographs and equipment rosters to get accurate information.

 

I try to pay attention to some, but not all, details; e.g. does a stripe wrap around the locomotive or passenger car, or does it stop on the side.  Or, does the A unit have a second headlight or only a single?  Some details I'll incorporate and others I won't.  My interest is having a sufficient level of verisimilitude that satisfies me; if someone wishes to point out my failure to accurately reproduce the prototype, no problem.  Heck, I may even incorporate the omission in my next project.

 

In any case, that's my interest in the "hobby" and I don't consider myself any more "dedicated" than anyone else--everyone should find what they enjoy.  While I have an interest in prototype, colorful passenger trains, I also appreciate Lionel's postwar animation accessories, most of which I own and operated when I had the space for them. 

 

I'm very content to be a "Toy Train Guy" and have no delusions about being anything else.

PS:  The late Richard Sherry did beautiful GM&O, Burlington, and other colorful diesels using postwar Lionel F units and did everything out of a rattle can; but, he had an eye for color that I don't have, and I got to watch him for the several years I attended "train nights" in his unfinished basement in Chicago.  He was featured on Vol. 1, episode 2 of the T&M vhs tape series 10+ years ago.

Personally, I'm not enthusiastic about the colors. In that area of the color spectrum, GM&O is much more attractive, IMHO.

 

Besides, the stripes don't line up.

Very nice cars, if O&W was a railroad I was collecting, I'd be all over them.  I do find the O&W an interesting road, kind of like the Rutland in Vermont.

A very nice passenger car set......unfortunately I have the ABA F3 set with heavyweights.....so, I'll have to pass.......but, they are tempting!
