I will send up a pray for ya.Being though one of those storms. They are nothing to take lightly. And we live almost 200 miles from the coast. But still got hit hard by hugo.
I very much worry about the animal friends that I dive with and will they make it. When you get to dive and go to the same places all the time they get to know you. They will often stay with you and stay with you entire dive. Sounds silly to some folks but i love it. One turtle always come to great me. Don

Don,
I remember you from the AOL Board days. Prayers to and your family.
Ken
I see you are still able to post. Weather.com says 11 plus inches of rain so far. I hope things are going Ok for you.

Don, they are just sizing you up for dinner! Hoping everyone there comes thru OK.
Don, Our prayers are out to you and family. Hurricanes and tropical storms are to always be taken very seriously. TS Alison gave us 36 inches of rain in a 24 hour period, June 9-10th, 2001, in Houston. Wound up with 4 ft water going through our house, spent 3 days in attic. Next 22 days were spent cleaning out, tearing out, trying to save belongings. Thing is, my collection and layout were, in part, submerged for several days and then, still wet before I could get to them. Did manage to save 99% of my trains, thanks to elevating all I could and the trains on shelving being high enough. Still, it was the high humidity and time in a storage unit that did the most damage. But, it was not the end, just beginning of restorations and a new phase of my trains and collection. New layout in OKC still a work in progress, but, only have to worry about tornados..... LOL!!!!!
Take care and God bless all those in harm's way.....

Take care DonO!
The hurricane has slowed way down. Not good. That means more rain for longer time. Hawaii (the big island) is getting tons of rain and wind. We won't see anything tell Saturday night now. The good news is some future computer tracks show a Westward turn before it gets to us. We are hoping they are right. All schools and many stores are closed. Right now no rain or wind just overcast for us. Thank you all for your wonderful thoughts.
Don
Good news. We are still thinking of you.
It's still a Cat 4, can't believe it. Lahaina is a boarded up, sand bagged town. They look like they are ready. I think we are as ready as we can be. Just turned off pool power and remembered I had a live extension cord of the floor in the train room. Trying to keep busy. I'm going down to Lahaina to shoot footage for the ABC station in the bay area. Don
Be careful going out there, you don't want to be the news.
Don and Vicky you are in our prayers Gail and Rob We miss OGG
Stay safe. I'm praying for you and your sea-living friends.

Stay safe! My thoughts and prayers to you and yours. I'm a Katrina survivor, it was very hard but we made it through! You will too.
God be with you!
Our footage made it on ABC news tonight. Power on and off. Trying to feed footage while we had power. Once a newsy, always one. Did get to talk to old friends while feeding. More know Vic at ABC than me. All were worried for us. Nice. Vicky was promo director there. I'm so tired. Noise LOUD. outside tonight at 12:11am. Can't sleep. HUGE WINDS but not much rain. Vic asleep in guess room. I'm in extra room. Master up stairs is empty. Lots of glass so we stayed out of it. We have been up for hours and hours. Don't know the numbers. ABC wants West Coast time feed in morning. All camera batteries are charged. I know I'm rambling. Need sleep but it's hard with a jet engine blasting right outside your window. Glad Vic can sleep. Will talk on other side. Don
Stay safe and best of luck riding this out!

Yes that constant howling wind noise. If you have ear plugs or ear muffs that will help.
Good luck to you and our loved ones,Don. Hopefully the storm will stay way south and spare you of most of the danger associated with this hurricane.
My wife and I once rode out a Cat I that was about 90 miles off of the Carolina shore and evacuated for another storm. All kidding aside, these storms are truly fascinating to watch, but nothing to mess with. I am sure that you are taking all precautions. Take care.
I am fearful of the storm surge at Lahina,Keihi, and Wailea. There are two ocean front eateries that we are fond of: 5 Palms and Sorentos. I hope that any damage will be minimal with no loss of life .
Stay safe and God Bless.
Norm
Don and Vickie, stay safe and our prayers are with you. Thinking of you.....
Well this was one of the bizarre days of my like. The wind this morning was super strong. We were asked by the bay area ABC TV station to give them a live shot all day by I phone. Vicky was setting the phone up in our upstairs bedroom window. She called me to look at some smoke from up the hill. Next we heard fire engines going by the house. I grabbed my big video rig and headed up the hill. Fire was everywhere. Police were trying to get everyone out of their houses. I was filming with some firemen about three blocks from my truck. All of a sudden fire was overtaking us. We all ran for the firetrucks and my truck. Somehow along the way I broke my ring finger. Still don't know how I did it. We just made it out of there. One woman was burned bad and had to be flown to the main island. Don't know how many houses went up. ABC network wanted the footage right away so I slammed it together at the house and was just feeding it when the police came and wanted everyone off the hillside. We had to grab the pets and get out. That was sometime this morning. We just were let back in. The fire is still going up the hill. They can't use helicopters for dumps because of the wind. Watch ABC tonight.
That was my day. House and Vic are fine. Don
Wow. I have no words. Be careful.
Holy cow! I'm glad you and your family are mostly and all right, it's a shame about the broken finger. I really feel for those poor guys that lost their houses in the fire, not something you expect in a hurricane!
You never know what will happen during a hurricane. Those fires were probably started when power lines went down. I've seen that happen once.
I hope everything turns out to be OK for you. I rode out a hurricane here last year in Sarasota, a lot of wind and rain but no big problems. Stay safe
Doug, that's exactly what happened. Don

Good!
At least you're keeping busy Don. Beats sitting on your hands right?
I've seen grounded lines make glass and asphalt bubbles, like small hollow lava (kinda ironic eh?) marbles that cut you if you crushed them; starting a fire is almost expected for me after seeing that wire dance...as in danced around for about a minute before it slowed and twitched like it didn't want to stop but was just too tired to continue.
I once had a steel awning get ripped from its bricks and flattened on the same wall before flying up into the storm. All in the time it took me to get up three steps and in my door....if I touched any steps Too dark to see a funnel if there was one...at just after noon too I spent the rest of the storm in the dark basement sitting on my hands... Bored but content
The rest of that day was gorgeous sun, moving felled trees, and exploring some new ruins.
It was better than sitting on your hands. I was going crazy waiting and waiting for this thing to hit. Loved it when ABC called yesterday and asked for some footage of Lahaina prepping for the storm. When this fire happened I really stopped thinking about the storm and worried about fire. Funny story. When I went to the hospital with my broken finger just to get something to protect it, the first thing the doctor said was "well thing will have to come off". I thought he was talking about my finger. He was talking about my ring. Don
Glad to hear you and family are still safe. Be very careful outside due to flying debris, comes before you know it. Have been through too many storms, they all have their own quirks. Take care, stay safe. God bless.
Jesse
WOW Don that was some footage! I too am glad you and your family are ok! But I am sorry about your finger, but more about your ring, I bet that broke your wife's heart!
I remember the Sugar Train as being up high above the coast... hope you are in its vicinity, or in similar terrain with no mudslides possible. Can't believe Mother Nature has it in for all the U.S. islands....Puerto Rico and Hawaii!
Short of a broken ring finger, it appears you came out of this unscathed Don. All of us who had you in our thoughts and prayers are most grateful for this. The big island took the brunt of it. First it's the volcano then this. One wonders what's next in store for them. Hope they can clean up rather quickly and get back to normal.
One more post? When you can.... It's been a couple of days and though it puttered out, you've still got my conserns on edge
If nothing else good comes of this, you've had an experience of a lifetime, and that's what it's all about anyhow
Well we finally got a little rain on the West side. The sad fact is 21 houses /buildings and 30 cars were burned up. The nice kid next door told us his girl friends house is gone. They only had time to take their cat. Nothing else. If we only had a little rain.
Don
I'm glad you're OK with the exception of the broken finger.
Don, I am also glad you and your family are safe! I hope you get the rain you need as we too are dealing with a forest fire here in Washington St.
Ending with a wish for rain.
Fate isn't truely cruel; it's just nuts
Is your wedding band going to be salvageable or are you looking forward to shopping once things quiet down?
..and the swelling
Don, so glad to hear that you and yours are fine. As for you aquatic friends, I'm sure they know how to find safe places to wait it out. Animals are keen that way. Glad to see your love of videography is still well and strong
Don, glad to hear that you are ok except for the broken digit. Sorry to hear about the homes lost to the fire. It looks like the weather forecasters were not far off with their 50 inch rain forecast, I just saw a news report that said a weather station near Hilo measured 51.5 inches of rain.
As another native Californian, I had to go out of state to learn about severe weather. It is certainly unpredictable, isn't it? Glad to hear that your home was spared any significant damage, but the burned homes are a very sad situation.
