Not really sure what forum to put this one in, so I guess I'll stick it here. I've been wanting a scale C&O Kanawha but they are hard to come by and often sell for more than a new PS3 steamer. It's common to see custom engine runs for train stores. I was thinking it'd be an idea for Kentucky Steam to have MTH dust off the tooling for a run of "in service" and CSX "Heritage Highball" versions, and sell em for $100-$200 over standard cost. It'd be a pretty neat fundraiser. Before I email them, I figured I'd run it past the group, might be a silly idea.

It seems to be the era for custom runs from MTH. I can't say for locomotives, however cars require a minimum run of 256 units. Typically, there is a deposit required to guarantee the run as well.
Not trying to discourage you at all, but I'd inquire with whoever does custom runs for MTH these days on costs prior to pitching the idea to any group and what the total investment is. At the end of it all, whoever sponsors the custom run is ultimately responsible for the cost of the minimum number of units.
The contact used to be Andy Edleman and he was great to work with. It sounds like he is no longer involved with the production side of the trains anymore though. I've been out of the loop with MTH custom runs for many years now.
I think it also depends on if/when MTH decides to run the Berkshire tooling. The custom runs seem to occur in "batches" of the same basic locomotive/car with individual dealer custom decorations.

As near as I can tell, the "custom" runs are really custom paint jobs as Rusty says.

Well, there's no new tooling going on, but they have the tooling for the Kanawha... On my list to have them rerun.... We could make it go for say 40 pieces...
