The MTH SD40 in GN livery developed a sound problem.  All sounds are normal when running except the engine sound, which has become very muted and somewhat distorted.  Did all the resets, etc., but no change.

Any idea what has gone bad and how I can fix it?  Or is this a "send to GGG" issue ...?

IMG_4834If the speaker is bad, it may look like the image above. The metal plating flakes off and they can get into the electronics and ruin them.

If the speaker is corroded, take it out before running the engine again. It is fairly easy to do...four screws and unplug it from the PC board.

You can get a replacement here...

It will work fine as long as you don't run the volume full blast...

Finally, If the engine is older, try using a small screw driver and adjust the volume control from "off" to "full" and back a few times. Sometimes the volume pot gets gunk built up. Turning it back and forth, may help.

Keep the battery in mind too. Here is the excerpt from the MTH manual...

I have never seen the speaker material get into the electronics.  Also, the speaker does not have to look like that.  I have run into a few that disintegrate from the inside.  The material surrounds the coil internally and that distorts the output sound by mechanically interfering with the diaphragm action.  Why sometime you only lose certain frequencies driven at lower power.  A horn/whistle trigger sends more power to the coil.  G
