If the speaker is bad, it may look like the image above. The metal plating flakes off and they can get into the electronics and ruin them.
If the speaker is corroded, take it out before running the engine again. It is fairly easy to do...four screws and unplug it from the PC board.

It will work fine as long as you don't run the volume full blast...
Finally, If the engine is older, try using a small screw driver and adjust the volume control from "off" to "full" and back a few times. Sometimes the volume pot gets gunk built up. Turning it back and forth, may help.
