I just received an MTH GP 35 (20-20290-1).  The locomotive has great sounds at idle and at speeds under 10 smph, but at higher speeds a high pitched sound begins. The sound is almost piercing.

I thought someone could explain what I am hearing and if the sound is normal or can be fixed. I have not experienced a sound like this any of my other MTH locomotives.

Any input is appreciated

go into your sounds setting menu or on your soft keys if you hava a dcs system and adjust the engine accent sounds a little this will keep your horn and idle  sounds the same but the turbine or generator sounds down to a low roar. In some of my es44ac's the operating sounds where  louder then the horn from the factroy and I applied this to my engine and it help stop drowning out my idle and horn sounds. Good luck

its the turbo thing man!- it took mth some time  to get it right in some of the soundfiles, but their pretty good now.

back in my tractor pulling days , a couple guys would put turbos on their older case and john deere 6 cylinder tractors. they whined pretty good with 20-30 lbs of boost, and really came alive on the track, when fed alittle more fuel.-jim

Hopefully, I've attached a video of the loco and its sound. If my loco's turbo sound is correct, I am sure someone will let me know.

Sounds OK to me. The Geep 35's I've heard had a pretty loud whine as I remember.

Nice looking units, Bill.

Sounds about  right to me. SD40's and GP40s should sound about the same. If I remember right the turbo is gear driven until throttle 7 or 8 and then exhaust gas spins it.
The GP35's were quite loud and just generaly noisy engines, at least on the Missouri Pacific where they were well used. The Mopac had a rebuild program that eliminated the turbo and turned many of them into a  GP38,called a GP35M.
