Does anybody know we’re I could buy some mth headlights. These are from the early 2000 starter sets and I have 3 steam locos with no headlight. It’s a very small light with threads on the bottom of the bulb. I’ve been looking every where and can’t find the bulbs. Any help would be much appreciated.

They are 14V #373, available from a variety of sources.
Look for E5 (E5.5) base aka "midget" or "Lilliput".
Note that MTH usually has them cemented in with Loctite, so they may be a bit recalcitrant to remove.
Edit: For further reference, the 6V #342 is used in most PS2 equipment.
N.B. The "regular" bulbs are E10 base, the above referenced base is smaller and used in doll houses and deprecated Christmas light strings as well as various model train applications.
Proto one or two?
These are the proto ones I assume they came with the starter sets in the early 2000s. The bulbs are really small and have threads on the bottom. If anybody has a link we’re I can buy some of these I would appreciate it. It’s weird that I took out my old mth steam locos and 3 out of 5 bulbs are out. I’m gonna have to buy 7 or 8 of these so I have some on hand. I haven’t run these in a couple years and didn’t think the headlights would go bad in storage.
They just may be loose in the socket.
No, I took the 4 screws out and checked them. Lol couldn’t figure out how to get the bulb out. I was pulling it and finally a figured out it was threaded in. It sounds like a joke. How many people does it take to scre in a light build. They look like small cylinders. The bulb doesn’t balloon out.
Does anybody know of a site that carries these bulbs?
Thanks a lot uber.
Thanks Uber, Amazon had a 10 pack plus socket and wire attachments for 11 dollars. Really appreciate your help I was looking for them online but didn’t know the part number. Thanks again, Mark
I have them 1.00 each. Drop a line,
@D500 posted:eBay (search for "small bulbs" or the like, and not just in "model railroading"). Many dealers in many things sell on eBay, of course.
See post above yours, I doubt you'll find them cheaper.
I'm interested in the experience others have had with replacing the traditional incandescent bulbs in Lionel 022 switches (which melt the lantern) with LEDs. What about same replacement for 71 lamp post? Would you recommend changing all bulbs to LEDs?
Recommended sources and sizes?
Thank you,
Richard
Just received the new LED bulbs and wow what a difference. They must be 5 times brighter than the factory ones. Great upgrade. 2 of the 3 steam locos lights is working. The 3rd one I can’t get it to light. I tried 2 other bulbs and made sure they were screwed all the way down (tight little buggers) and made sure all the wiring checked out and everything looks good. I’m not worried about it as everything else on the loco works fine. This loco is the type that the tender plugs into the engine so I don’t know if the problem is coming from a bad pin in the tender or the loco its self. As always a very big THANK YOU to everyone who responded and helped me find these bulbs. Your Awesome. Mark

I would definitely replace the bulbs. They offer clear white or the standard yellow in led. It really makes a difference at night time when I’m running the train at night. I’m gonna order more and change all my locos to LEDS. Amazon has all the different sizes you would need. You might find them cheaper but I can’t wait a week to get them. I like the 2 day deleivery with Amazon and their return policy.
Merlin,
I appreciate your response. When I go to Amazon and search "miniature led bulb", the response is overwhelming. Do you have a link or specific numbers to type in? Has anyone made a chart of recommended led bulbs for Lionel equipment?
