Been noticing a LOT of MTH Proto1/OS1 Locos on E-bay this holiday season. We’re talking MTH’s original Proto version. Big question….Are these Locomotives compatible with MTH’s DCS System which operates their Proto 2/3 formats and can these Proto 1 Locos operate on the same layout as Proto 2/3 locos?

You can use a variable channel on a TIU to run them on your layout just like you would any conventional engine.  Rotate the thumb wheel to raise or lower track voltage and this controls their speed.

If your layout is presently set up to run conventional and DCS, usually by using separate track segments for each of these types, then Proto 1's will work just fine -- exactly like all other conventional engines.

More specifically, like all conventional all Proto 1's are usually powered separately from DCS locomotives, hence the use of separate track segments.  All DCS segments receive fixed 18 VAC but conventional segments receive 0-18 VAC variable.
