I am thinking of getting this mth dash 8 engine. I am a little confused about the product number. this engine see photos has high rail wheels and truck mounted pilots it appears. that is what I am looking for. my question is I thought all mth product numbers ending in -1( for example 20-*****-1) was the scale wheels with fixed pilot models. can some one clear up my confusion. what does the -1 at the end of the mth product number indicate? thanks.

Ron045 - Not that it matters now but when MTH/RK first began turning out new engines did not a '1' as the last digit mean that the engine had ProtoSound, whereas a '0' meant it didn't? Just curious as my memory isn't as good as it used to be. (lol)

You might be correct. I do not know how they did it back then.
But the OPS Box does say PS3 20 (Premier) -1 (HiRail). That much we know is true.
Have Fun!

Yes and it still does. HO has DCC ready for example using the -0 ending. The very early stuff started with MTxxxx.
Ron was correct that -2 at the end means it has scale wheels. Starting a few years back the numbers began with 22-xxxxx-2 for scale wheels and fixed pilots.
There are some new sets out there that are numbered a little different. The new PS3 covered wagons (F and E series for example) have multiple types of engine sold separately. So the ones that start with 22- signify scale wheels or 20- means 3 rail.
The ending numbers now have more variations like in HO where there's a -5 for Marklin (AC) type.
