Is it safe to assume that on all MTH engines where the box is marked "sounds by QSI", or the box just states "proto sounds" (with no number like 2.0 or 3.0)  that these are all Proto 1 sound systems?  I have many of these older MTH engines which I purchased many years ago, and plan to replace all the batteries with BCR. I am looking forward to getting these early MTH engines running. Thanks in advance.

I use BCR's in all my MTH/QSI Proto-1 locomotives, and they run like Hamilton watches. One of my oldest is Southern Ps-4 1401 (20-3006-1), made in 1994, upgraded with a sound board and chip from a RailKing Ps-4 made in 1997. MTH1401f

Another is Reading GP30 5513, the first production GP30 (20-2073-1), also made in 1994. This locomotive has its original reverse and sound system. It was beginning to falter, and a BCR saved it from a scrambled chip.
