I recently privately purchased a Railking SW 1500 switcher.  I replaced the battery as the old one was bad.  I tried to charge the battery by placing it in the track at 14 volts.  WHile powering up, the engine started forward.  I tried to place it in neutral, but it will only go forward.  After several hours of going in a circle, I tried to check to see if the DCC would work.  I tried to get it into neutral to reset it to original factory settings.  The TIU reads the locomotive, but will not operate it.  The train will only go forward.  Any ideas of what I can do to get it into neutral to reset the engine?

Thank You in advance

Ok You have DCS....

Timing is everything when powering up a dcs layout. There's a signal that goes out of the tiu called the watch dog signal. Any powered   proto-2 engine senses the watch dog signal and then knows it's in command mode and does nothing until instructed  by the dcs remote. This applies to any dcs engine whether added to the remote or not.

So what Am I getting at..We need to know whether your engine remains dark and silent when you first power up the tiu. Hopefully it does.

One question at a time... Does your engine start up with sound and lights or not when first powering up the layout (fixed 1)

Next I guess we have to know whether you have other dcs engines that run  OK?? in command mode on the same track.

If so I think you're probably going to have to take the shell off and check out the wiring at the motor to see  If any strands of the motor leads are touching the motor casing . That's a sure take off for sure and probably not so good for the circuit board.

I'm not sure what else you can try, perhaps the unlock direction feature with the bell and whistle combination but I think you may have other problem if the engine is missing the watch dog signal. Even if the tach reader is not working the engine still should remain dark & silent and not move.

Hopefully someone else chimes in. they will.  good luck
