Hello,

I'm looking for some help regarding the following problem:

I have an MTH Loco with PS 2.0 and when I place it on the track in both 2 and 3 rail mode, the engine starts right up.

Let me back up a bit and explain exact steps.........

The engine is PS 2.0 and I am using DCS only , not conventional transformer.

I place the engine on track, power up and I hear the "click", about 1 second later the engine starts up, stays in place but runs through the normal sound sequences. The volume, lights and smoke work perfectly, but of course I cant "talk" to the engine with my remote when it does this.

Sounds play after I kill the power so I don't think its battery issue but you never know.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sal

I just did a test on a ps 2 loco that worked with no issues several months ago and I got the same result of starting up as soon as power came on.

I was having ps 3 signal issues as well. TIU has been suspect for a while but I didn't think it would cause that behavior in a loco. I always blame the loco first  :-)

Thanks

Sal,

Three things to check:

  • Make sure that the TIU's red LED comes on when power is applied to the TIU and then blinks as many times as you believe the TIU's ID# to be, For example, TIU #1 should blink once and then come on steady.
  • Make sure that the DCS signal is turned on for all TIU channels: Menu/System/DCS Setup and press the AON soft key
  • Trace the wires between the TIU channel and the tracks to ensure that the wire from the TIU channel's Red output terminal goes to the track's center rail, and that the wire from the Black terminal goes to an outside trail.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Sal, when you say "power up," I assume you mean turn on power to that track, and that the TIU has already been powered up.  Do you turn the power on by feeding power to the TIU input,(which one?) or by turning on a toggle switch that is between ZTIU and track?

What happens when you press "startup" while the sounds are playing?

I have the same problem.  It occurs with only one engine, I have another engine on the track as well, but it waits for me to start it.  The other engine starts up when power is turn on and the only way to control with the DCS remote is to shut it down and restart the engine, then everything works fine.  MTH recommended that I reload the sound file, does that make sense?
