Is the way the "smoke" comes out on the MTH smoking tank cars prototypical? That is, in a steady fan driven stream shooting up for several inches as opposed to a gentle wafting like a loco at idle. I recall the original ones were of the 'wafting' type but those had to be recalled due to possible fire hazards.

As far as prototypical I think any smoke coming from a tank car is a bad thing! As far as the model it has a fan driven unit that blows in a steady stream.
I have the Isaly's coffee version of this car from 2009. As I recall, it is fan-driven and kinda blows out in a plume. I like it, but don't use it much. When I do, I use JT's coffee-scented fluid.
The most realistic would probably be the LOX labeled cars, they have venting to prevent excessive pressure buildup.
It is supposed to simulate a high pressure relief from the safety valve, so it be under pressure. Did MTH do a chlorine gas version?

If MTH did make a car like that it would be cool. However, I would not want chlorine gas scented smoke fluid to go with that tank car.

I don't think I want a chlorine gas tanker venting anywhere near me!
How did I make it so long without this feature?😁
Carbon Dioxide tanks will vent. More than once we had to stop and inspect the train because some well meaning person reported a tank car venting a plume of CO2. If the person gave a good car count, we could look on the paperwork and find that it was a CO2 tank car.

How about a methane gas version ?

Some tank cars are designed to vent, depending on the commodity. If they did not, then you might have a problem.
To Chuck’s point above; I’ve attached a derailment photo. If you look toward the background; you can see the high pressure venting he mentions.

We have cows to supply all the methane we need.
Slightly off topic, weren't some of the early smoking tank cars recalled due to some type of a fire hazard?
I think I may have one of those, I don't have the number right in front of me but I know that it is a NASA smoking tank car.
P.S. John, i hear that there is an attempt by our government to remove those farting cows, they may not be here much longer!

Yes! Search "smoking tank car" on MTH's product locator, click to the 2nd page of search results, you will see that the earliest two tankers (one of which is your NASA car) are marked... "this has been recalled - return to your dealer," or something like that.

It has been around for more than 10 years!
