I purchased this unlettered MTH center-cupola steel caboose (20-91727) to run with several locomotives for which I do not have a matching caboose. Much better than running a locomotive with a caboose that doesn’t match, so it will be very useful. It is a well-made model of an ordinary caboose. MTH makes high-quality products.

Melgar I too bought one of these MTH "Northeastern" style cabs.

But in my case am going to turn it into a "ACY" cab.  April 1963 the ACY seeing their aging caboose bought two of these NE types from the RDG.  The ACY painted the roofs the same red as the bodies. add the simple large "ACY" road numbers etc.

Now MTH actually offered a ACY version in the the correct road numbers.  I will profess my comments with the fact I am a HUGE MTH fan.  But sometimes they have gotten things so close but missed the mark.  Their 20-91625 was their ACY offering in the court road number 66 7 67.  MTH even painted the roofs the same red as the bodies. The lettering was the right type and size.  But MTH used "yellow" markings instead of the correct "White."  Now yellow was in fact the old color for the ACY.

I will not go through with the trouble to repaint the roof but do have a couple sets of the correct "white" decals for the markings.  If my engine ever shows up will proceed with the decals.   I have 10 MTH two bay hoppers for the ACY.  But again missed the mark since MTH spelled out "Akron Caton & Youngstown" in white letters. whereas prototypical would be just large white "ACY."

Ron,

Thanks for your comment.

My preferred brand is MTH - by far. I think their quality, operation and fidelity to prototypes, especially on locomotives, has always been the best. Even though we're just talking about a common caboose in this case, I was very impressed with how well it is assembled. Everything on mine is perfect - couldn't be any better. I like unlettered passenger cars and cabooses because they can be run behind any locomotive. On this one, I would have preferred black or red trim instead of yellow.

I probably will not add lettering to this but, if I do, it will be the initials of my model railroad - the NYT&B.

As far as MTH quality is concerned, check out Switcher Saturday on 12/17/22. I'm planning to post a comment about an MTH locomotive that might be of interest to you...
