My new MTH Premier Line Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway K-1 class 2-8-4 Berkshire in action! A special run from Patrick's Trains, most of the W&LE hoppers are from Patrick's too. A really great locomotive. Whistle steam is amazing! Puts the whistle steam on my Lionel Legacy Berkshires to shame.

A note on the whistle steam you have to add fluid by taking off the steam dome, it's magnetic, instructions don't say anything about it at all.

TrainWizard ... Ref " A note on the whistle steam you have to add fluid by taking off the steam dome, it's magnetic, instructions don't say anything about it at all. "

Interesting ... I didn't realize this steamer had whistle smoke.  I have a new MTH 20-3796, "Nickel Plate Road" Berkshire.  With your hint about taking off the steam dome, I managed to carefully pry my steam dome up/out of the way then added 15 drops MTH smoke oil.  However, not getting any smoke when pressing the whistle button on my MTH hand held.  Also tried the SPW function with scrolling thumbwheel for quillable whistle ... no smoke, but did have quilling whistle.  Also tried gentle mouth blow down the port .. still no joy.

Any thoughts on getting whistle smoke output on my Berkshire.

Tom

FYI ... I subsequently read about MTH Premier Big Boy also having steaming quillable whistle, googled for its operators manual and got it ... https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...ction/20st13360i.pdf
The instructions for operating its steaming quillable whistle are on page 37 of this pdf.  I followed these instructions just now on my Berkshire using my MTH hand held remote ... press SPW soft key then press FSW soft key then rotate thumbwheel to activate quillable whistle.  Immediately got a plume of smoke coming out of the brass whistle.
This added info might help someone else.
Regards,
Tom

Yes, all of the new Berkshires and the Reading T1s have whistle steam. The upcoming USRA Pacifics will have it too. It was not in the printed version of the 2020 V2 catalog but they did amend the digital version on the website. I think it was also mentioned during some of their Facebook Live events.

For my Reading T1 2100, I referenced the manual for the most recent Premier N&W J that has whistle steam. For the T1 you simply add fluid through the whistle 4-6 drops. Anything more than that might be overkill.

I've used the DCS WiFi App since it was launched. I activate the whistle steam by switching on the Playable Whistle and Whistle Steam features. I blow the whistle a few times to test and then I switch the Playable feature off and the steam will still come out with the regular whistle and set whistle sounds like the forward, reverse, etc.

I have one of these new Premier Berkshires as well for NKP.  Thanks for this tips on how to use Whistle steam.  I’ve been able to get it to work with the DCS remote, but not with the DCS app. I’ve turned on both whistle steam and the playable whistle in the app on my iPhone, but can’t get it work.

I’m curious what you think of the bell?  At first I thought my engine had a bad sound set, because it rang so fast.  This is the first MTH engine I’ve ever had where the bell rings so fast. I’m slowly getting used to it, but I still think it rings too fast.

The app is a little finicky. Lots of trial and error was involved in figuring it out. I've found if I shut the main Proto-Smoke and the whistle steam all the way off for a minute before turning it all back on it works. There might be some blockage in the whistle too like a bubble.  Trying to blow down the steam dome hole and see if that helps.

The bell is alright in my opinion. It's reminiscent of how 765's bell actually sounds as it uses a mechanical ringer.

Any chance you an provide me with the Sound Files? My 765 Sounds don't play?

You'll have to ask MTH for help with that. Not in my skill set.

The water tank that appears at the beginning of the video is REALLY nice; is it a scratch built model?  👍 🙂

Glad you like it! You'll be surprised to learn it's a standard MTH Operating Water Tower. I just gave it a wash of India Ink. Really gave it some character! The base has been covered by ballast to match the rest of the yard.
