Arizona Train Depot and Roy's are OK little train shops, and they are near each other so you can catch them on the same afternoon, but they are both distinctly minor and not worth a special trip unless you happen to be in Mesa on other business. Phoenix is huge and just getting from one side of town to the other can take an hour or more. I agree with Peter A that the railroad park up in Scottsdale is the #1 model train attraction in the Phoenix area. If you happen to be near it, the newish light rail system around downtown Phoenix is also worth a look. Nice and modern. What you really don't want to miss in Phoenix is the zoo and botanical garden (next to each other). The botanical garden is beautiful, one of the best exhibits of desert plants in the world. The art museum has a nice permanent collection of Western art, some of which has trains in it.

If you get to Tucson, the Gadsden Pacific Toy Train Museum is a great place to visit. We are also having a train show May 31 and June 1. Contact me offline for details.
