Is your grandfather living ? If he is, have you listened to his stories ?
Dan, I'm afraid it's a "No" on both of them.
If you know what branch of service he was in, that would help you to learn/understand some of his tasks and responsibilities.
Cool that you have railroading in your lineage. Mine came from my maternal grandfather. He worked for the Missouri Pacific for a spell during the Depression. He wasn't a large, husky, man, so the MOW work was taxing on him, but he stuck it out as best he could so he could put beans n' taters on his family's table. I can't remember if he got cut off as things slowed or what, but he ended up in carpentry. Tough times for those living in the Ozarks during the depression.

Funny thing, my gramps worked not directly for the railroad but for a car shop, can't remember the name, He started out in Leavenworth KS, than in the late 60's they moved him down to Coffeyville to run that shop. Funny thing was we never talked about trains at all. I did get some of his Navy stories from WWII which I always liked. My dad, his brothers, and then later me and one of my cousins followed the Navy footsteps so I always liked that heritage. You've got me wondering now, have to figure it out!
