Yesterday I received my brand new MTH FP45 Santa Fe diesel and set it on my programing track (a section of track about 6' long with DCS signal of 10 totally separated from my big layout) and as soon as I turn the power ON the locomotive came alive (it should be totally silent) with lights and sound ON, anyway, I was able to program it in my remote and run it back and forth and all the features Ok, this morning I removed it from my programing track and set it on the big layout with the rest of the locomotives in order to pull a freight train and I got the mesage in my remote: "check the track" "engine not found", right away I check the DSC signal with my Erie Lackwanna SD45 and the Santa Fe Blue Goose and the reading is "10", of course the track is clean, in fact I put the new FP45 Santa Fe in between the Erie Lackawanna and the Santa Fe Blue Goose about three feet away from each other on the same track and then turn the power ON and the Erie Lackawanna and the Blue Goose took the command and run perfect, how ever the new FP45 refuse to came alive and my remote show the stupit "check the track", "not engine on the track", I am assuming somethink wrong with this locomotive, so I call MTH this afternoon and I was told that the service techs work only Tues., Wend. and Thurs. only from noon to 5pm in the mean time I am stuck with this unreliable piece of junk, very dissapointed MTH, I hope you read this post. Any idea about this issue? the batteries in my hand held are new fully charge.

Well, at least we nailed down the problem to the engine.
Does it operate conventionality or is it completely non-responsive?
It does work in conventional, no problem, but, not with DCS at all, I am not an expert in Electronic but my two cents opinion is that the electronic device who picks the DCS signal from the track does not work, therefore my remote shows "not engine on the track"
My PS 3.0 Railking Scale Amtrak FP-45 is due to arrive this week and I was wondering if the electronics would support the addition of a Mars light? I was thinking of having it modified by drilling out the blank nose headlight and moving the upper headlight bulb down to the nose and having the Mars light up top.
Also do the non powered FP-45's have a lighting kit in them?
You can add a MARS light that isn't dependent on the electronics. These are tiny modules that will fit anywhere. ngineering MARS Simulator
They do a very nice job and are reasonably priced as well. It would be easy to connect this to a PS/2 locomotive, as you can connect it directly across the headlight for power. Since the PS/3 directly drives the headlight LED, this may take a bit of work to get a MARS light working in one of those. Of course, you could use track power, and with a bit if circuitry, you could sense the headlight state and switch it on or off...

Make sure that the DCS/DCC switch is set to DCS. If it is, switch it to DCC and see if DCS can find it. Sometimes the switch is wired reversed.
I took the shell off in order to find the DCC switch because the Quick start manual does not mention anything about DCC it only shows two little pots located underneath the engine: one is volume control and the other one is smoke unit, in fact the manual that came in with the locomotive is wrong because the picture shows four wheels power trucks with two center pick up rollers and my engine has six wheels (four of them power and the other two idler wheels) with only one center roller per truck and there is no DCC switch what so ever, there is only one board with a lot of mini plugs and that was my chance to check and make sure all them are plug in all the way, I did not see any loose connection either, I can not download the complete manual from the computer because is not available yet because this is a new locomotive, so I am stuck until tomorrow get in touch with MTH service
Take a look at the underside of the frame behind the trucks after rotating them to the side. That's where they are on some MTH diesels
I just look at the underside as you said, only two small pots: smoke and volume that is nothing else.
I think the DCC/DCS switch is only on premier models, not the Railking versions.
I believe you are right, my loco is Railking
Chuck,
I think the DCC/DCS switch is only on premier models, not the Railking versions.
You may be right.
I know for a fact that my new PS3 RK Imperial M1A Mountain has no DCS/DCC switch. Instead, it has an internal jumper. If his engne has such a jumper, it may be set to DCC. If so, MTH should be able to confirm this and tell him what to check.
You got this to load once. It may be worth trying a recover engine to see if that gets it back into the DCS.
Since you have the shell off, you can inspect the wiring around the PS-3 board to see that it is not to close to the Torrid coil inductors and interfering with the DCS signal. This was a known issue on early PS-3 engines. G
Finally I got in touch with the MTH Tech and the conclusion is that I have to send my new FP45 Santa Fe to MD, so, it is in his way to get it fix, I do not know how long it is going to take to get it back
