I love my   MTH Bigboy that came out in March 2013 & ever since then I've been looking for another one. My thanks go out to Tom (rtr12 on the forum) for a lead on a new one. I was able to purchase it & it arrived today. I haven't lubed & greased it yet so I just started it on my test track. I figured if 1 Bigboy is good; 2 have to be better.

Spence,

I like it.  It looks, sounds, and smokes great!

Since we have seen so much activity on the Lionel VL lately, the question that eventually begs to be asked, (but I'm sure brand loyalty bias would come into play) how do the two brands compare?  Of course I am figuring price into the equation.  If the Lionel has more features one would expect it to be more expensive.  However, it could be priced out of some modelers price range.  Therefore those modelers would rate the MTH higher.  Pure speculation here, and I am not asking your personal opinion.  One would have to own both before making a determination.

For instance, I like my MTH PS2 Y6b a lot.  However, I bought it from a forum member at a great price.  I have seen photos and videos of Lionel Ys, but probably wouldn't have been able to buy one.

I like MTH as well.  In fact the only Lionel I have is a 2012 Polar Express and two post war engines my daughter bought me at a thrift store.

Spence, have fun with it.

The MTH articulated locomotives are a lot of fun. I bought my son the MTH PS3 Allegheny for Christmas and it hasn't come off the tracks since that time.  Smokes like a demon, terrific sounds, and runs very smoothly too. And the Imperials negotiate the tighter turns as well.  It's a real hit with us.

Good Luck with this one Spence....I learned a valuable lesson from your misfortune a while back ...look before you run anything ! I have a Imperial version too from 2008. I bought it off a forum member for a great price ! I also bought a mint early PS1 version at York last fall. I installed a BCR and it has been getting a lot of run time.

I never knew this but the Imperial tender is about a inch longer than the early Railking version.

I have a PS2 Imperial BB and an PS2 Premier BB from MTH. I love them both because they run fantastic. I have a BB for any size curve....

I am waiting for my Lionel VL BB and I expect it be spectacular too. I think both companies produce great products, but they also have their unique problems.

What ever you buy you will be happy. We are lucky in the US to be able to purchase these items at a much lower cost than in Asia or in Europe. I have seen their prices and it is very very high..

Enjoy your BB

Spence is right, I have had 2 PS2 Imperial RK Big Boys and they both ran great.

I still have one of them and it's one of my favorite engines. Sound and smoke are fantastic.

They can take tight curves but be ready for them to remove anything close to the curves.

Cab swing out on O-31 is right at 4" so they will widen the right of way.
