OK- I give up! Does anyone know what the little black plastic block is that comes with some of the newer Legacy engines? Here's a picture of the one that came with my 4-6-0 Camelback

I am going to watch this question because I'd like to know, too. My guess: it's either a block to extend the coupler reach or for mounting a scale coupler. I'm probably wrong on both.
That looks like a spacer for when K-D couplers are installed. See if there is anything in the instructions about changing to scale couplers.

That's a pretty standard Lionel scale/Kadee coupler adapter.
Thanks, guys. Mystery solved! I can sleep tonight! I also saw that a fellow OGR member, right here in the forum, Rich Barrista showed how he installed scale couplers, and in one of the photos, THERE IT WAS! The Mysterious black plastic block!
His post was "Lionel Burlington Northern SD40 (with scale coupler)" and he had nice pix showing the whole conversion process.
