I'm "bran new" to operating a just purchased Legacy 990 and cab2 remote. Less than an hour operation, in fact. The red knob causes sporatic up/down voltage as knob is turned in the same direction. Legacy forum search revealed some kinds shavings messing it up. Worked great out of the box, then started acting up. Before I screw this up, how does the knob come off to check for these "shavings" or some other problem? Anything else might be causing this problem? Thx in advance for any help. TW

Might be best to call Lionel.
Unfortunately, it will need to be returned to Lionel. Fortunately, it is a known issue and will be covered under warranty.
Option#2 - If you purchased locally, call the dealer to ask for an exchange. If no, see option #1.
If option#1 - register the product online and then call Lionel service.
The warranty on a 990 system is indefinite. Moonman has the best 2 options.
Bummer, not what I wanted to hear of course. Thx guys. I'll start the return process. TW
Got the RA number. Returned the whole Legacy 990 Command set. Lionel requested. $16.50 FedEx. TW
It stinks to have to send it out, but $16.50 is cheap insurance. Lionel will check everything and you will get back a 100% unit fully updated. yes, they want the whole works.
An FYI on legacy repairs. I sent mine in on 3/28/17 for above reason. Came back 4/20/17. They replaced Cab2 remote. Works just fine, but, is an old remote, as it has wear marks all over it, and contacts on back have charge marks on them. Kinda sore about that, but like I say, it works fine so, so what? Just kinda urks me I didn't get a new one back. TW
I sent my remote in for service and had inscribed my name on it.
I got the same one back so maybe scribing your name on the remote will get yours back.

Well, shoot them an email or call and ask them what gives? You sent a brand new one in and want a brand new one.
Good thing you didn't get mine - the side grip rubber is sticky - like booger glue
