It sounds like the engine is not receiving the signal. Is the command base on? Did you power it first before powering the track?

I'm not sure you did anything. Does this engine have Odyssey? The symptoms suggest a speed control issue. Usually, this involves either the sensor or the encoder ring on the motor. Did you open it up and check it all is well there?
OK, while it was in bat out of.... mode I heard a crack. Pulled it off the track and there was a rattle inside.
Pulled the shell off and found this.
Any idea what this is? It's about 1 1/4" in dia.
The engine in question is a 2002 BNSF Dash 8 TMCC, # 18291.
Yep, that's the encoder ring for the Odyssey, which is why the locomotive takes off like a shot. They're readily available from Lionel parts, contact them and you're on your way to a fix.
Here's the motor, but I believe you can pull the flywheel and just replace the ring. I haven't had to do this yet...
Thanks for the pic, I'll dig a little deeper and see what happens!!
Thanks John!
Oh, I know what happened. Apparently, it's not uncommon for that magnet ring to shatter, it just hasn't happened to any of mine. I have dug those pieces out of someone else's engine, but we put a Cruise Commander M into it, which solved the issue.
Any idea how to get that motor out???
Take the big screw out of the bottom of the truck, the motor should fall out.
Turned out to be the "big" screw and one from the front pick up roller.
Thanks John!
Steims - You win hero of the day with that diagram!!
Thank You!
I will be sure to mention that to anybody today that asks.
Good luck on getting the new part and fixing her up.
Arghhh.... Back together and now nothing... CW80 green light just flashes...
Well of course that means you have a short. The hot stuff is touching the ground stuff somewhere. Look closely where the wire lugs (#20 and 29) attach to make sure they are not grounded against anything. Also on the pick-ups, make sure the insulators (#10 and 12) are oriented correctly to prevent the pick-up bracket from touching the truck.
I am trying for "super" hero status.
OK, all back together. Those flat bearings are a bit tough.
On the track, it runs, smoke works, horn and bell work but no railsounds...
Any ideas?
Check your sound switch.
Bill
Embarrassed but grateful to say it was the sound switch. Yeah!!!

Don't be embarrassed, I've done the same thing
When I first got the Legacy, the train brake bit me, a simple but stupid thing. It happens...

Same thing here, it took me awhile to see what I did and I almost took the. Shell off to find the problem. Ah! The fun of our trains.
