April (and now May) has been “Alco Month” on the workbench. I’m tuning up a few pieces which arrived in a bargain box a while ago.
An MPC era unit with a two-position E-Unit was so filthy it didn’t run at all. After a thorough cleaning, it runs fine – forward. But in reverse, the motor and two-position E-unit just hum loudly. The armature looks like it wants to turn, but it can’t make up it’s mind. It looks like it’s being pulled in two directions.
It does look as if someone tinkered with the wiring at one time. But, I’ve compared the wiring to another unit of identical vintage and everything seems to connected properly.
The armature turns freely in both directions – so there's nothing physically stopping the motor from going in reverse.
So, is the E-unit defective – or is the motor wired incorrectly? Any suggestions?
