I have a Dreyfuss Hudson that was a PS2 conversion. A very nice engine but too loud at the lowest possible volume setting in DCS mode even after factory reset. Would be fine for a big space but my train room is pretty small.

My question is whether there is a diode install in series with the speaker or other way to attenuate the sound?

Thanks

A diode would lower the volume but it will introduce distortion due to how a diode turns on and that you'd only be driving the speaker-cone in one direction away from the unenergized position.  Of course you might not be able to perceive any of this but nevertheless I'd suggest just a resistor...such as 10 ohm 1 Watt.  Or 8 ohm or 15 ohm or whatever is easy to get.  A resistor should be cheaper than finding the right-sized speaker and ought to be easier to restore to original condition if later your train room gets bigger, you want to sell the engine, whatever.

Thanks G and Stan. Figured I would get the best answers from you guys. Pretty sure I have some power resistors laying around. Will try that option first but also keep my eyes open for an 8 ohm speaker.

NicksTrains,

I got it a while back ago on the FSoT forum and it was already converted. It has a nice big metal tender with plenty room inside so I don't imagine the conversion was too hard. Would like to do one myself for a PS1 FEF.
