I'm a 3 rail guy so please don't shoot me but I figured if anyone would know where to get what I want, it would be the guys that try their best to make their stuff look prototypical.

Does anyone make 85 foot(21.5 inches)smooth side passenger cars?
They can be pre made or in kit form to me it doesn't matter .I've been doing this stuff long enough to be able to buy or build.
I want to run these behind an N&W "J" and to me anything shorter looks like your runnin the short bus.

I have the curves to run them on but I can't seem to find them.

Thanks

David

Hot Water,
How long were they?
It's weird how the different scales do things differently. I didn't know what a madison car was till I came to O.

And if your in N scale or HO you can buy 85 foot cars all day long smooth or ribbed side.

I would kind of like to have some 85 foot kits.I'd like to have them look like the day they rolled out of the paint shop all shiny and new.I have enough trains with a matte finish. This is the one set I'd like to look like the paint's still wet.

21 1/2" is going to be difficult. Most are 21". You might look at Sunset - I have not measured them. I doubt you will be able to tell the difference between 21 and 21 1/2" in a train. Blank extrusions are available, but they are not for the faint of heart. And gloss will be a challenge - future floor wax might help.
Thanks Bob,

I can lay the finish myself. I have a fair amount of experience in the paint dept.
But trying to find anything via the internet any more is like trying to find hens teeth. It's no more trouble to have them shiny than dull .I can just use a gloss automotive enamel like the real ones.
there's girl(woman) in the paint supply here that is a wizard at mixing paint.
If I tell her Tuscan red gloss she'll fix me up in no time.

I've done 4 hot rods and 3 muscle cars so 7 or 8 cars ought to be a snap.

But when I do a search for passenger car kits I get the 5 dollar run around

David, I think it's all about what your tolerance is for close enough versus accurate, and how big a factor making it an authentic replica is.
As I recall the Pocohantas was a always a mixed bag of heavyweight and lighweight cars, and many were less than '85 ft. In short, IMO Hot Water's approach sounds most reasonable and I'd ask him for the specifics around his consist "recipe."
David,

You might consider attending a couple of the 2-rail O Scale shows.

I see older kits turning up at the shows I attend pretty frequently. You might have to go to 2 or 3 to find what you want, but then might see them at the first one.

The Chicago 2 day show in March is a large show. There is also a 2 day in Indianapolis in September, and there is a 1 day show in Cleveland about the first weekend in Nov. There are also a bunch on the East Coast as I understand it, and there is on called O Scale west that I think is held in the San Francisco area.

Some one was putting out alist of O scale shows also.
Only problem with those unpainted Sunset Brass cars is that they have no brake, underbody or interior details. That's why a brass passsenger car would sell for only $125. BTW I bought the diner in that auction.. can never find enough of those. It's on my project list for 2021. 2012 has been designated as the year for the layout, Everything I work on has to have direct ties to finishing parts of the layout so freight, passenger car and loco projects are low priority.
