I have fastrak. Is there anyway to attach the switch track lanterns on without hurting the operation of them?I was thinking a tiny dab of silicone?Cats can't resist them. They bat them off and play with them. Some get lost.Nick

I like the idea of silicone because it's non-conductive and you can peel it off with tweezers.
Cats are "interesting". I have two -- one of which I know will be a layout problem. It's a battle of wills which I'm losing badly. The other one doesn't look like she'll be a problem.
Cats like trains (and slot cars).
It doesn't get any better as they get older, here's Lily taking a swipe at a car:
And Max lounging, not sure if he was interested in the trains or the "Joes":
After a hard day of working on the RR:
Never see them in that pose again now that Max has grown. He is definitely an Alpha Male.

I have two cats, one is three and the other is one. Thy both get up on the platform but neither bother anything.
The younger one just hangs around anytime I'm in the train room. He is my train buddy.
Both are great friends.
You might need to buy some small plastic balls or small plastic cubes for kitten toys.

One of my more curious cats had to be last-second rescued before being hit by my green BRUTE and its four car passenger set!
Some SEVENTY-POUNDS of steel moving at a fair clip!
Someone also used the craft tacky glue, a small dab with a toothpick. After some time, they work loose and fly off from switching. It won't permanently stick to the plastic.
The silicone caulk sounds ok, too.
No cats, but a 3 year old grandson that kept pulling them off. The tacky glue deterred that fun. Now it's larger items.
Have they started blocking the tracks until they get their way?

Boy, do I feel for you. We brought in 5 kittens and their semi-feral momma who were born in a box in the garage. They are fully grown now and won't leave. Luckily, we didn't have a layout they could destroy, but they got the rest of the house!!!
Train your kitten with a water squirt bottle. When you catch the kitten in the act, squirt it.
Whatever you do, do it NOW or you will be annoyed for a l-o-n-g time. My cat is not allowed in my train room. Of course he owns the rest of the house.

I had a cat try that once. I blew the whistle, but he didn't move. When the train hit him, he moved.
Our current one is not allowed into my train room. The only time he sees trains is at Christmas, and even then I set it up so it is hard for him to get to the train.
I had a friend who modeled HO trolleys. His cat used to take its claw and pop the trolley poles off the cars. My friend would come into the room to find poles all over the layout.

Put up some "No Cats On Tracks" signs around the layout. If that doesn't work threaten to take away their cat nip.
The squirt bottle mentioned above is probably a better idea though, but start using it when they are young.

Right on, Bobby. I don't even need to squirt it any more, just show it to them and they are gone.

Mantel model powered with William's U-33C frame.
Re-painted U.S. passenger cars.
Its not easy to model Chinese "O" gauge.
We came home one time around Christmas. We found our big Tom Cat asleep in the middle of a tipped over tree and destroyed under tree layout. We he heard us come in....he just raised his head and gave us the 'aren't you proud of me' look.....he had defeated the dangerous Christmas display!!!

That is a very cool commercial! I had never seen if before. Thanks for sharing.

While I have never been a cat person, I have to admit that they are very cute. I probably wouldn't feel that way if they were on my layout however.

Never heard of a Kitten wrecker, until now....
Cats are definitely cool people. They think they own everything!

About 20 years ago I had a cat that would get in line behind the train and follow it all around the platform. She never bothered it just liked to walk behind it when I was running it. On the other hand I have a male cat now that destroys everything. I usually close the door to the train room whenever he's in the house.

Great video! Ahh, the good ole days when people didn't use the "F" word in every sentence or have their face buried in a cellphone or iPad. People actually COMMUNICATED and INTERACTED back then.
As for that cat on the track: MEEEE-OWCH!
I'm so embarrassed. All our cats are 'fraidy cats! They do get on the platform but when I run the trains they flee like rappers from a classical music concert.

TMCC Marines missile launch set. After picking off the cat on my old layout a couple times with the missile, the cat would take off upstairs like a rocket as soon as it heard ' scanning for targets'. Then it almost never got on the layout again.

It is what you might call a "cat-tatstrophy".....
this is the duck under to my layout. we came from lunch one afternoon and there lay Tigger fast asleep. was lucky to get this picture. he then got up walked down the mainline and thru the tunnel to the next room and got down. no harm. he gets up and finds a place to sleep every so often, he's going on 14.
ps 2 track Atlas bridge.

Whatever you do, don't water-spray a Maine Coon or mix...they'll like it and keep doing what they did to get squirted. However, one brief hiss of Dust-Off and they're off like shots.
Years ago, we discovered that dusting a tree with cinnamon would keep most cats from climbing it (except for Kara when she was a kitten, but then, she's only slightly more stubborn than a mule.) What's neat is that you don't need to be in the room with the tree; as far as the cats are concerned, they tried to play with it and it rained cinnamon on them. If it's something you can't dust, try a piece of cloth with peppermint oil or Vicks on it stashed in a safe location. Most of them are really not fond of the smell.
I love reading posts about pets wrecking stuff. Thank you
We wipe all our power cords down with a product called Bitter Apple. Cats don't like it and it last a long time. Even our Maine Coon didn't like it!!!
My Maine Coon Henry falls asleep after a day of train chasing!!!
Gone now......want another Maine someday.
