My new Lionel Legacy B6sb 0-6-0 switcher (Lionel #2031390) makes a noticeable whirring sound when running forward above speed step 40. There is no whirring in reverse at any speed or forward below speed step 40. I’ve attached a video where you can clearly hear the whirring when Railsounds is at a middle volume.

I’m wondering if I need to grease the gears? The owner’s manual does not indicate how to access the gears. I’ve attached a photo of the underside of this engine. There is a screw marked “A” and a deep hole marked “B” on the photo by me. Could either of these access the gears for greasing?

Alternatively, does this engine just have  a noisy drive train at faster speeds? Or does my particular engine have a problem? I’d appreciate any ideas.

I would definitely lubricate all your engine grease locations and small drop of oil on each moving side rod mechanism's! you remove the screw in the center of the wheel's and inject grease into the whole put enough to fill the whole! always remember new engine whoever makes them Lionel or MTH or any manufacture sometimes slip threw the factory where there built and don't get lubricated at all!

also yo might take the engine cover off and inspect if flywheel is hitting tach board or gear box plate is loose or not aligned right causing motor noise issues!

A would be the grease screw hole. Remove the screw and shoot some grease in there with a syringe.

A video with the sounds completely off would be better, but that sounds like gear noise.

If it doesn't get better after greasing. I'd consider requesting an ra from Lionel and sending it to them for warranty repair.

The drawback being, Lionel customer service is difficult to get ahold of.

I’m with Rick, and somewhat with Alan on this one, ....I’d shove some grease in the well and see where that leads you,...however, if it’s under warranty I wouldn’t do as Alan suggested as removing the shell could potentially void the warranty,....that’s not rod or valve noise, although a drop of oil on everything that moves is not a bad idea, ......RickO is right on the money, some grease loaded in a syringe is the easiest thing to do,....be mindful of the tiny gasket on that screw, sometimes it’ll stick to the screw, sometimes on the locomotive, and sometimes it disappears never to be seen again,...😉

I'm leaning more towards a gear issue after that video. Its harsh, and seems to oscillate a bit in time with the rotation of the drivers.

I'd contact Lionel for warranty repair, unless your dealer would consider an exchange.

Noisy gearboxes seems to be a more common issue in the last few years. I recall the shuddering of the legacy J3a hudsons last year.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions! An exchange from my Lionel dealer is not possible because my road name (Great Northern) is sold out. So, I’m going to begin the process tomorrow of getting an RA from Lionel Warranty Service... the last time I did this in August for a problem with my new Legacy Big Boy, it took over a week to reach them on the phone and then another 4 weeks to receive the official RA via email. My Big Boy was returned to me after 5 more weeks with the smoke unit repaired, but the right side work lights no longer operable... it’s now been back at Lionel for another month... someday I hope to run my Big Boy... and my Great Northern B6sb!
