I just opened my new Lionel New York Central Legacy Dreyfuss J3 Hudson #5452 to pull the eight Lionel 20th Century Limited 21" passenger cars I detailed.  I set the switches so Blue Tooth was off.  When I turned on the Lionel ZWL transformer, the engine "Popped" and there was an electrical smelling whiff of smoke.  It was not a good sign for the first time power was put to this expensive engine.  When I turned my 990 Remote to speed step #1, the engine took off at full speed.  Only turning OFF the ZXL transformer would stop the engine from moving forward.  I do not buy Lionel often anymore and am very concerned about how long the engines will last.  My Experience says "One Second".  If you count the puff of smoke, "Two Seconds".

I have a new Lionel 2331070 Chesapeake & Ohio LEGACY Greenbrier #614 that is still factory sealed, and I am holding my breath that it will work.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?  I run my layout with a Lionel 990 Remote and a ZWL transformer.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Ray, Alan, MartyE and Gunrunner John,

Thank you for your advice.  The Lionel 2331402 New York Central Legacy Dreyfuss J3 Hudson #5452 is headed to Lionel Service.  It will be six to eight weeks before I will see it again.  Until then I will pull the Lionel 20th Century Limited passenger cars that I detailed with my custom Patrick's Trains Lionel 1931800 Hudson #5416.

Alan.  I renewed my Sustaining Membership and Digital and Print Subscriptions.  Thank you for the reminder.

Have a good evening and throw another log on the fire.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Sent the Lionel 2331402 New York Central LEGACY Dreyfuss J3 #5452 to Lionel Service yesterday, January 23, 2024.  I appear to be in good company with the people in the parade of repairs to Lionel Warranty Service.  Misery does love company.

Painting ninety-six more Preiser 65602 Unpainted Seated People for my next passenger train: the Lionel New York Central Southwestern Limited.  Fortunately, I have the NYC E8 engines for this passenger train.  Getting close to 6,000 people painted in O-gauge for over 220 Lionel and Atlas O passenger cars detailed.  Plus, I did 120 Walthers HO passenger cars with HO Preiser Seated People when my eyesight was better.

Sincerely, John Rowlen
