Here are a couple of videos I made of the new Lionel defect detector. Tried to get a random sampling of announcements and defects. In the video the volume is set to Max and it is quite loud. Granted it's on a granite countertop. Not sure how it will sound on a layout.

you would think they might listen to the real thing just once so they new what they sounded like and said. same goes for the crew talk. not that hard to listen too a scanner for a bit and duplicate.
Having worked for the railroad myself, and gone over detectors many times, i would say it's not a bad rendition for a toy train accessory.

It sounds acceptable. Would be neat if you could load your own recording of some local detector.
Is it actually counting the axles?
Yes. I only pushed the one boxcar, so all the videos repeat the "axle count - 004." (4 axles)
If more cars were added it would give the actual number of axles for the whole train.
Detecting a problem with any axle on the train is pretty neat. Having to hear the "no defect" message every time the train passes could get real old, real fast. Also, if there is a problem on my layout (14x39) will it make it around to the detector before there is a bigger problem?
It's not loud enough on a layout, between the engines and the freight sounds box cars you can barley hear her. I did take a small hole saw and cut a hole under the speaker, that helped quite a bit. Now I need to make a paper cone to stick under there to amplify it a bit more. Old tricks from car speaker installation.
