A friend of mine got the new Lionel EM-1. The locomotive looks sharp and runs nice on the legacy control system. But when the hobbyshop tried it out at the store, the tried to run it conventionally and had no luck. It just cuts out and starts back up when the power is dropped to change direction. Does anyone know what could be the issue, and if there is a way to "conventionally" reset of the model?

I have had similar trouble with an MTH loco. I have a Legacy 0-6-0 that sometimes ignores commands in conventional mode. Stop, go, whistle, and bell. Sometimes I gotta press the button a few times before it cooperates. I would love to hear what others have to say on this one. Once my button press goes through, the loco runs great. Getting to that point is like convincing a toddler to eat delicious saurkraut.

Did the hobby shop make sure the Legacy base was unplugged from the outlet? A base plugged in will still send the CC track signal preventing conventional operation.

Yes, the hobby shop tried multiple times. They double check their work, and couldn't find anything. I brought the model to my layout and its doing the exact same thing.

When you say, it cuts out and starts back up, are you referring to the sounds only?  Does the engine change direction ok?  If so, this is normally behavior.  If the engine has the battery option, you need the battery to maintain sounds when changing direction conventionally. When you change direction conventionally, you are cutting power to the track and the sound system will shut off. I believe lionel got rid of the battery connector because they figured most people do not use/need it when running it with legacy.  The plug option may still be on the railsound board but you would need to solder on a battery connector so you can connect a 9 volt baftery.
