While running my new mth RS3 yesterday, I noticed some slight warpage in the hood of the shell right by the smoke stack, so this morning I opened the shell and removed the black plastic smoke fluid channel attached to the underside of the shell and noticed that the plastic was indeed melting! Here is a pick -
I also noticed that the smoke unit looked like it had been overheating, due to the blackness around the soldering joints. Here is a photo before I opened it up -
The unit had been operating properly, but where the roof warpage occurred, which appeared to be the spot just above the brass funnel for smoke output, it was clearly excessively hot.
Upon opening the smoke unit, I noticed that the wick was as if it had been in a 10 year old train, with excessive browning and some blackening by the solenoid. Here is what the wick looked like when I used my tweezers to pull it out of the bottom of the smoke fluid well -
I have never seen this type of mth smoke unit as it had only one solenoid that appeared to be just touching some half inch cut wick stuffed in the bottom of the tray. Here is a photo after I removed the wick -
I sanded the melted underside and placed a pice of reflective tape to help prevent future damage, just like we do on our subway sets. However, has anyone else experienced this? Was the wick improperly installed at the factory? Any tips or advice?
I’d like to reinstall some new wick and test run it without the shell but I have never replaced wick with this type of mth smoke unit. Can someone walk me through on the best way to do it? Do I just cut a half inch of wick and stuff it in so the solenoid touches it? Does the wick go over the solenoid? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
