I have been wanting to get into model trains again for some time and I am now ready to take the jump.  HO would be the practical way for me to go but I really like the sound and detail O scale has.  In addition it will be easier to use as I get older.

I played with SCARM and put together a layout that is 8x11 using Gargraves track and Ross manual switches.  I was able to use O-72 curves on the main, a minimum of O-54 curves on sidings, and a minimum of O-54 switches.  I have seen YouTube videos of people running trains on sharp curves and locomotives and cars look a little to big for the size curves they have.  I understand I am not close to scale curves on my layout but I am wondering how the locos and cars will look on the size curves I am using.

Thank you for the help and I look forward to continue reading the topics and replies on the board.

Welcome to the Forum!  My home layout is similar to yours, 8 x 12 and I have a couple of "ground level" ovals of 0-72 track.  I run mostly scale stuff, and I love very detailed scale rolling stock like Atlas hopers and tank cars, MTH and Lionel scale tank cars, MTH, Atlas and K-Line scale intermodal cars, etc.  In my opinion they look and run fine (although I don't have any switches to worry about).  Here's a sample.
