Hello All,

I first want to thank all of you for your good information.  My question is this I am interested in scratch building my buildings and scenery I have the mountians and the tunnels started and they are coming along well now I just need the buildings.  I have been picking up model RR magizines and though the pics are great and the attention to detail is outstanding.  I need some more how to articles, plans sets and things of that nature.  The way I have envisioned my model RR is an old coal town in Eastern PA to a power plant and possibley expansion to an oil refinerey.  If anyone can help me with what materials i need and some plans for stores and company houses I would really apreciate it.

try valleymodeltrains.com for pics from most of the major manufacturers. you can search "company houses" for example just to get ideas. some of the kits (like american model builders aren't expensive if you go that route. if you need more pics for scratch building go to the specific website of the manufacturer. . I have often used manufacturer sites for multiple pics of structures that I want to scratch build.(foslimited is a great source but much more involved designs than what you are describing). the key to building these structures are often the window and door size. if they are to scale and your exterior dimensions are "reasonable" (I.e. you don't way oversize or undersize a structure) you'll be fine. you do not need scale plans or measurements unless you are trying to duplicate a prototypical structure. windows and doors from tichy or grandtline), clapboard siding fromnnortheastern scale lumber, mt. Albert or even micro-mark. good luck.

You can also try out Clever Models  They have very good card stock models that you can detail out.  I build mine all on foam core board and put LED lights in them.  I found using velum for the windows works as you can print a pattern on the vellum with an inkjet printer.  This can help keep the cost down.  I have them built out for the background flats. Lee Willis as done something similar with great results, putting people in the windows.
